Senate to question nonprofit political spending The U.S. Senate will likely hold hearings on why nonprofit groups can spend money on elections with little scrutiny by the Internal Revenue Service, according to Bloomberg. Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), chairman of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, had said he will ask IRS officials why they didn't take action to prevent nonprofit spending, the news agency reported. Much of the focus will be on 501(c)(4) groups such as American Crossroads, but there are also questions about associations' contributions to those organizations.
